Orangeries are the predecessor to the conservatory and date back to the 17th Century. Originally designed to protect valuable and exotic plants and fruits during the winter months, early orangeries had large windows and doors within a stone building. Today, orangeries retain a unique character that sets them apart from conservatories, but the distinction between a conservatory and orangery has evolved over time and often characterized as having one or more roof lanterns. Orangeries can complement particular architectural styles more easily than a conservatory and are often more suitable for a kitchen or dining area as they offer more privacy.
